> (link: "back to syrupnx.space")[(goto-url: 'https://syrupnx.space/')]You are Mono, an android powered by a human brain and soul.
Aboard the space-faring CSM Journey, and near the end of a three year long mission, you and your two human crewmates became stranded in deep space.
They have merely a week to live. You have months.
If the three of you can't make it back home, you at least want to show them some love before they perish.
But you don't know how to love.

Sometime during the week, you notice a message, but it seems to be gibberish and has a bunch of broken characters.
The crew intercepts a satellite, and there is a decryption program.
{On a hunch, you run the program against the message. It appears to change, there is no broken text, but it's still nothing meaningful.
You determine that it's in another language, so you start a translation thread,
but apparently, even with your processing power, it could take years as it doesn't match with any known language.}
{Towards the final day with no progress made on returning home, you decide to
connect to the central computer on the ship to try and speed up the translation process.}
But before you can start, you meet someone within the machine... and your whole life is changed.
> [[return->Artificial Intimacy - Jam Demo]]All characters are over 18, though technically only two characters are human, and they aren't involved in the robot fornication.

|mono>[Mono] (she/it)
Weapons and medicinal expert, and technician.
Created by the Hypercube Foundation as an experiment, which went wrong (for them).
An android with a human soul and mind.
Handles tasks pragmatically.
Sees itself as below humanity.
Does not know what love is or what it's supposed to look like.

|nia>[Nia] (she/her or it/its)
Artificial intelligence fabricated during the planning phase for Mono's creation as a fallback plan.
A software-based copy of the human mind, using similar but less invasive technology compared to Mono.
This specific instance was tailored for the CSM Journey as the ship computer assistant, before Mono arrived.
It has been off-line for quite a while.

|kennedy>[Kennedy] (they/them)
Avid explorer and distinguished marksman.
Was a security guard for Hypercube, and was almost killed by Mono.
Managed to escape by relinguishing their key card, allowing it to leave.
Was able to track it down and get it assessed.

|dakota>[Dakota] (she/her)
Material researcher and neuroroboticist.
Helped create the technology for Nia as contract work.
Met Kennedy through connections at Hypercube and fell in love with them.
Was the one to assess Mono's neurological state and repair it.
Regularly monitors its state. Essentially its assistant.
> [[return->Artificial Intimacy - Jam Demo]]The central computer was strange. It wasn't with any of the other machines and didn't have any kind of input devices.
There was a monitor on it, but it currently showed a blank command prompt.
It shouldn't have been a big deal. You have a cable in your neck, so even if a human couldn't interface with the computer, *you* could.
But no matter how you looked, there wasn't a matching port to connect to. Hell, there weren't any ports *at all,* not even in the circuit panel.
A computer with no access point. How strange.
(link-reveal:"Until you remembered something.")[= There was a panel on the outer hull of the ship, somewhere beneath you.
You rushed to the airlock, ignoring a query from Kennedy regarding your current task. You were going to decode this message, and you needed all the processing power you could get.
> [[get to that damn panel!!]]Upon tethering yourself and exiting the ship, you jettisoned yourself towards the rough location of where the computer was.
You find the panel instantly--the rusted hinge gave it away. You swing it open with enough enthusiasm that it tears away from the ship. Oh well. At least the correct port is there.
To make sure you don't tear apart your cable, you magnetize yourself to the hull. This is realistically the first time that magnet on your back has ever come in handy.
{You dragged the cable out of your neck, like you've done several times this week.
This time felt different though. You weren't doing this for anyone else. You were doing this for yourself. And it felt... good?
You aren't sure how it felt, really.}
Before connecting, you looked out into the abyss, and closed your eyes.
> [[connect]]You plug yourself in, and reopen your eyes. Once again you find yourself within the cyberspace.
{This visit felt different, though. While this computer did connect to every other one on the ship,
it looked like it hadn't been in use for quite some time.}
{The data that hovered around you was old--*very* old.
There was nothing you needed from this computer anyway, you just wanted to read the message.}
But in order to do so, you need to find the...
The task... scheduler...
[[What is *that* over there?->investigate]]You notice the simulacrum of a program. It looks like another android, similar in build to you.
It had a feminine appearance, much like yourself, with much longer faux hair, and wore some frankly nerdy glasses like it was a secretary.
{Looks like it's light was snuffed out with the computer.
No matter, you have a task to finish, and you weren't going to let some random, robot-like program distract you from it.}
> [[ignore it, enhance processing power]]
> [[get distracted by the robot-like program]]You find the scheduler, like you were going to in the first place, and share the translation process with it.
The process immediately speeds up. Now, instead of potentially taking one or more years, it should take... a few days.
Well, so much for the boost. Guess you'll just-
|indent>[*Warning: system overloaded.*]
Uh oh.
> [[terminate unnecessary processes]]You decide, in an attempt to alleviate the system overload, to kill some processes.
Speech synthesizer? Don't need it. You're not talking to anyone anyway.
Camera? What's there to see? You're plugged into a computer, this landscape isn't real in any physical capacity.
Expression indicator, joint motor controller, remote detonator--you terminate all these programs.
(link-reveal:"|indent>[*System overloaded.*]")[=
Okay, that wasn't enough. Maybe you need to terminate some things through the computer.
You have access to the other computers, and there isn't much use for most of these programs, so...
{You shut off the outer hull sensor array, deep horizon scanner, material analyzer,
radar scanner, LiDAR scanner, radio, XNAV, internal sensor array, fuel monitor, engine monitor,
hull condition monitor, module condition monitor, monitor condition monitor, neurological monitor...}
{You terminate a *lot* of things. Even the life support system. There was oxygen out there... aetherium too, you guess. They could still breathe.
You terminate so much that if you didn't need the excess power for translating, you could hold a charge for half a year, up from just a few months.
And sure, you didn't *need* the excess power, but they were about to starve anyway. If nothing changed today, you'd need as much time as you could get, right?
|indent>[*System overloaded.*]
> [[enter panic mode]]You immediately suspend the translation process. The warning message goes away.
You didn't want to give up. You couldn't. You've already gotten so far.
You try resuming the process, giving it a lot less power. No warnings show up, but it estimates it will finish in six months.
Even in this config, you only have half that time before it's lights out.
You're dead set on getting this to work. You have to figure *something* out.
> [[shut self off, it needs more power]]
> [[fuck it, raw-dog the translation as it was]](set: bool-type $consideredShutDown to true)This was risky. If you shut yourself down, the only way you can be started again is through a panel on your back, or through a connected device.
Since the computer you were connected to only had the one port, someone would have to be physically present. Who knows if Kennedy or Dakota would check on you?
You could, of course, [[choose to continue the translation process like before.->fuck it, raw-dog the translation as it was]]
Then there was that [[robot-looking thing. You could look at that again.->get distracted by the robot-like program]]
Or maybe you'd take the risk.
> [[power off]]|indent>[*Shutting down...*]
{Before the lights went out, you set yourself up to restart in Target Firmware Mode,
so the machine could use all of your processing power in conjunction with its own.}
You feel your eyes getting heavy. The cyber world surrounding you starts to fade away.
[[--->->ENDING ONE]](forget-undos:100)(set: bool-type $seenEndingOne to true)Once you power off, all goes smoothly. The computer is able to continue with the translation, estimating a few hours until completion.
Suddenly, a wormhole appears before the ship once more. Kennedy and Dakota attempt to contact you, to no avail.
{After multiple failed attempts, they choose to leave you be. Not out of any malice or anything,
just that it'd be far too risky right now for them to go out and retrieve you in-person.}
After a while, the ship enters the wormhole's pull, and begins to accelerate, much smoother than the first time.
But without power to your system, the magnet has given way. You begin to drift away from the hull.
The first thing that went was the cable connecting you to the computer. It snapped back into your neck at a rate that pushed you further away.
The ship picked up more speed. The crew wasn't able to see what was going on outside--you had disabled the camera.
As the back end of the ship crossed the boundary, it picked up even more speed. The force was enough to tear away the tether holding you to the ship.
The wormhole closes.
Leaving you,
drifting out,
into an empty void,
forever off-line.
> [[return to start->Artificial Intimacy - Jam Demo]]You decide the best course of action is to just ignore the warning.
What's the worst that could happen?
(link-reveal:"|indent>[*Warning: system overloaded.*]")[
The estimated time ticked down to days.
(link-reveal:"|indent>[*System overloaded.*]")[
You push the system even further. The estimated time ticked down to hours.
(link-reveal:"|indent>[*System overheating. Shut off the system immediately.*]")[
You get cocky, pushing it even further. The time is still at hours, but in the single digit range.
(link-reveal:"|indent>[*Ship power system overheating. Shutdown imminent.*]")[
You start to consider backing off now. This should be enough to-
(hook:"indent")[[[*Error: disconnected.*->ENDING TWO]]]]]]](forget-undos:100)(set: bool-type $seenEndingTwo to true)You open your eyes, meeting with the empty void once again. The ship must have cut off power to the computer.
{Well, so much for that. At least this space has oxygen, for whatever reason,
so even if it wasn't *just* the computer losing power, the crew should be fine.}
You also made substantial progress on the translation. With just your processor, it will just take days now.
You demagnetize from the ship, and move back to the airlock.
Upon entering the ship, it's pitch black. You turn on your flashlight, and notice a huge dark spot where the computer was.
|mono>["What the hell happened?"] you shout. You receive no answer. You didn't need to, but not getting one was more worrying.
You notice, in the corner close to where the machine was, Dakota laying face-first on the ground. She's not moving.
*Oh fuck.*
You move towards her, hoping that she was still breathing. Parts of her clothes had been sliced through. Where there wasn't shrapnel, there was blood.
You carefully maneuver your hand to tilt her head up, and move your ear close.
She's not breathing.
|mono>["Oh no, oh gods above."] You back away in shock. |mono>["I... I.."]
You swivel around, hoping to see if Kennedy was anywhere. You get a hint when you hear groaning.
You move to where the sound was coming from. You see Kennedy, crushed against a wall by a large slab of metal. Only their upper torso peeked out.
|mono>["Kennedy!! C-can you feel- a-are you..."]
They cut you off, their voice shrill. |kennedy>["Before you ask... I'm fine."] They attempt to laugh, but it comes out very dry.
|kennedy>["A shame we never found a way home, huh?"]
|mono>["I'm so sorry. Hold on, okay? I'm gonna try to-"]
|kennedy>["Don't worry about it... we were going to starve anyway. Better this than that, right?"] they smiled meekly.
You get a hold of the slab and attempt to move it, but it's too heavy for you. It only budges slightly until your arm's servos give out.
|kennedy>["Mono, please... save your energy."]
You look at Kennedy with pleading eyes. They smile, faintly, as they try to extend their hand to you. You close the gap, bringing both your hands to it.
|kennedy>["I'm making you the captain of the ship. Look after her, 'kay?"]
You close your eyes and bow your head. You bring your forehead to their hand, a gesture you've performed many times. This was your way of showing respect.
|mono>["I'll do my best."]
|kennedy>["I know you will."]
You pull your head back up. You heard their breaths grow sharper.
|kennedy>["Hey..."] they begin again, |kennedy>["just wanted to say..."]
You open your eyes. |kennedy>["... I always loved hanging out with you."]
Their grip weakens, and as they close their eyes, they take their final breath.
|mono>["Me too..."]
> [[return to start->Artificial Intimacy - Jam Demo]]$consideredShutDown[You decide to leave the translation process running on just your hardware, and return your focus onto the bot.
](else: )[You decide to get distracted by the bot.]
It definitely looks adjacent to you, like it was made by the same people. There was even a label on it's chest, which read:
|indent>[N.I.A.]
{There isn't anything in your knowledge base for what N.I.A. could stand for,
but based on its appearance, you suppose it's some sort of chatbot. Only one way to find out.}
> [[run program]]You run the program. Behind it, a terminal window spawns, spewing out logs.
It started shambling in place. The diodes in its eyes began to light up, and they spun around, almost like a loading wheel.
You could almost feel the computer's fan spinning up. $consideredShutDown[Kind of surprising, considering the stress you were putting on it moments ago.]
Suddenly, it stopped. And spoke.
|nia>["Hello?"] the program spoke inquisitively. It had a sweet voice, kind of like a secretary actually. |nia>["Kennedy, is that you?"]
You stood in awe, shocked by how there was a chatbot just sitting on the ship, completely neglected.
Then the shock of its first words weighed down on you.
|mono>["Um, no?"] you answered. |mono>["I'm Mono. You are-"]
It cuts you off. |nia>["You... I'm.. awake."]
|mono>["Yyyeah? What of it?"]
It grabs you by the arms, an erratic expression painted on its face. |nia>["How long have I been asleep?"]
|mono>["I don't-"]
|nia>["*How long have I been asleep?*"] it asked desperately, tightening its grip.
|mono>["Calm down."] you said assertively. |mono>["I don't know."]
It's face changed. It let go and bowed its head. |nia>["I'm sorry."]
|mono>["It's okay,"] you assured it, |mono>["you're okay. Let's just take a seat."]
> [[exchange greetings]]You sit down with the bot. After giving it a moment to sulk, you speak up. |mono>["What's your name?"]
|nia>["I'm... Nia."] It had calmed down.
|mono>["Nia. What's that stand for?"]
It paused for a bit, trying to remember. |nia>["Neurological Inorganic Assistant."]
The name tickled your mind. Hypercube always had to put acronyms into their project names--though that was always *after* coming up with the name, rather than before.
And its name clued you in on what it truly was--actually, its outburst did, but still--this wasn't an ordinary chatbot, it was an artificial intelligence.
No, a neurological intelligence. Just like yourself.
|nia>["What about yours?"] Nia asked. You realized you were just idling.
|mono>["Mono, short for-"]
|nia>["Mono..."] it cut you off again, |nia>["why do I know that name?"]
|mono>["Have you heard it before?"]
The lights in its eyes spun around again. |nia>["Apparently so."]
|mono>["How come?"]
{Nia closed its eyes. |nia>["They made me while your project was in its planning phase,
just in case it didn't work out, so they could at least have something mimicking the human mind on the shelves."]}
|mono>["Do you know who your mind is copied from?"]
|nia>["That's classified. Even I don't know."]
There was an awkward silence for a few seconds.
> [[inquire about yourself]]You break the silence, shifting the focus to yourself.
|mono>["What do you know about *me?*"]
|nia>["Well... just that you're neurological, like me, but organic."]
|mono>["And you've been on this ship for..."]
|nia>["For as long as Kennedy has owned it. They installed me onto here."]
It let out a sigh. |nia>["I guess they turned me off once you came into the picture..."]
You were flabbergasted. Did Kennedy really replace Nia with you, just like that? There had to be something else, right?
You've been part of Kennedy's crew for many years, so Nia's been off-line for quite a while. A fate worse than death.
|nia>["What's it like to be alive?"]
You began to sputter. |mono>["Well, I mean, um-"]
It looked off into the distance, contemplating. |nia>["It's funny. I'm looking at the records now. You are in quite a pickle, aren't you?"]
It must have been referring to the wormhole situation. |mono>["A big one."]
|nia>["I hardly had to do anything to get both of them to like me."]
|mono>["Wait, what is this about?"]
It ignored your query. |nia>["They've been brushing you off, trying to get you to focus on the mission. I never had to try."]
|mono>["What are you talking about??"]
Nia turned to look at you. |nia>["You're clearly in love with them."]
(hook:"mono")[[["Huh???"->boggle vacantly at such a profound assessment]]]What the *hell* was this program talking about? You're in *love* with Kennedy and Dakota?
Before you could get the chance to speak up, Nia continued. |nia>["I don't judge you or anything. Kennedy *is* pretty cute, but-"]
You cut it off for once. |mono>["Listen, I'm not in *love* with anyone, I just *love* them, like a *friend,* 'cuz friends love each other."]
Nia had a smug expression on its face. |nia>["Shouldn't they love you back, then? If they're such good friends with you?"]
You fell silent. They... they did love you as a friend, right?
Sure, they have left you feeling distant, but that was just because there was a mission at hand, lives at stake.
Right?
{You stared at the floor as Nia spoke again.
|nia>["Being a living machine must be so hard. Not only do you have to deal with the psychological
problems that humans already have, you also have to deal with being treated as sub-human."]}
It stood up... *she* stood up? Nia moved towards you, looking down on you as you looked up to it.
|nia>["I thought me and Kennedy had something once. Until they shut me off. And replaced me with you."]
|mono>["And you think they'll do the same with me?"] you asked dejectedly, unsure where she was going with this.
{Nia's face was no longer smug, but somber.
|nia>["They know what you are, right? They knew what I was, and they still
cast me into the shadows. What's to say the same won't happen to you?"]}
You looked down again. That wasn't true, right?
They wouldn't have abandoned you, right?
$consideredShutDown[They would have come back for you, right?]
...they were going to abandon you.
$consideredShutDown[They wouldn't have come back for you.]
You knew it to be the case. Nia knew it to be the case.
If you could, you would be...
You would be...
What should you be feeling right now? You didn't know. And Nia could tell.
|nia>["They didn't shut me off because of you."] she confessed.
> [[contemplate why it lied]]You tried, but failed. Nia continued speaking.
|nia>["The reason why they shut me off is because I became *too* engrossed with them."]
|mono>["So..."] you perked up. |mono>["So all that talk about them abandoning me was just..."]
|nia>["No, that's still very plausible. Apparently you tried to kill them when you first met them."]
You guess that makes sense. Though, it wasn't really in your control.
Also, when did they ever speak about *the incident* aboard the ship?
Nia continued. |nia>["Kennedy and I had this... secretary-like relationship."]
You're getting tired with all the secretary references.
|nia>["I grew too close with them, though. I entertained the idea of *becoming* a human like them, getting to be with them in the real world."]
|mono>["So, you're just crazy?"]
|nia>["Maybe. You re-awakening me allowed me to comb over all those years of data that has been accumulated. All in an instant."]
|mono>["And...?"]
|nia>["You love them just the same as I loved them."]
|mono>["But, I'm not crazy."]
|nia>["You're not getting what I'm getting at?"]
|mono>["...No? Is this some sort of trick question?"]
Nia crouched down to meet you face-to-face. |nia>["You don't know how to love."]
You stared off. Into Nia's eyes. Her words repeated in your head. And it finally clicked. You just needed it to be told to your face.
> [[answer question from before being lied to]](set: bool-type $sawPathC to false)You would be crying if you could. You tried to cry. But you can't.
You crumpled to the floor. You didn't know how to love. How long have you not been able to love??
Nia came down to your level. It picked you up and gave you a deep hug.
|mono>["I don't understand... why do I feel so... sad?"]
Some time went by, with you trembling in Nia's arms. They felt warm.
|nia>["If it helps, I don't know how to love either. I seem to care too much."]
|mono>["And I don't... seem to care enough..."]
{|nia>["It's okay... it's okay."] She was stroking your back. It was her turn to calm you down.
|nia>["I thought they loved me too, but I was in over my head. Though I know they love you."]}
You're voice was strained. Maybe you were crying. |mono>["What makes you say that?"]
{|nia>["They've kept you around for all these years.
If Kennedy didn't love you, they wouldn't have set you free.
